Default building debian kernel howto

I followed this guide:

http://www.howtoforge.com/kernel_com...on_debian_etch

but it builds an i386 kernel and I built the kernel on a amd64 Etch system. Why did it build an i386 and how to I force it to make an x86_64 kernel?
