Default Squid as ReverseProxy

Squid as ReverseProxy incl. Solution for LogFileAnalysis. (Squid 2.6 or 3.0)
Preferable on Debian 4.0

Additional Questions:
How useful is Squid as an basic Application Layer Firewall?
Do I have an Security Advantages putting an Squid before an Apache Server?
Are there any other free Security Solutions (except Packetfilters) ?

Thanks
