Default "Cannot open diaplay" message:help

I tried the Dual Boot tutorial I found on the site, but at a certain instance, after typing "gparted" and the partition tool is supposed to run,the message "cannot open display" comes on.I tried the F2 key and all the possible commands (fb1024,intelfb800,etc.) but nothing changes, the same message is displayed always.
Thus,I could say that the attempt to partition the hard drive with WinXP and install Ubuntu, failed completely.
Any suggestions are welcome.

You could try the GParted Live-CD instead: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php
