sudo apt-get update stalls at 57%

I'm trying to download an update as suggested here, http://www.howtoforge.com/lamp_installation_ubuntu6.06, and it's stalling at 57%.

I also tried, sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop, which gave me a broken files message.

help.
