Default NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED when attemting to manage groups

Samba is running as installed from the howto forum. Ubuntu 6.06 LTS.

I have three ntgroups mapped.

ntadmins (S-1-5-21-3604512347-1559823644-2652237561-3003) -> ntadmins
Domain Admins (S-1-5-21-3604512347-1559823644-2652237561-512) -> ntadmins
Domain Guests (S-1-5-21-3604512347-1559823644-2652237561-514) -> nogroup
Domain Users (S-1-5-21-3604512347-1559823644-2652237561-513) -> users
I verify the user with
root # net rpc group addmem "DOM\ntadmins" alan -Uroot%not24get
Could not add alan to DOM\ntadmins: NT_STATUS_MEMBER_NOT_IN_GROUP
I then attempt to del the user from the group
root@fileserve:~# getent group users

root@fileserve:~# net rpc group delmem "DOM\users" alan -Uroot%not24get
Could not del alan from DOM\users: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
I really just don't get what I am doing wrong

Really could use a helping hand here.
