Glue Records?? Not a clue...

Hey guys.

I have two dns servers (ns1 and ns2 - using MyDNS Config) with the same domain names as
my - to be official web domain (web1 - using ISPConfig).

Example:

DNS Servers:
ns1.mydomain.com - 1.2.3.4
&
ns2.mydomain.com - 1.2.3.5

Web Server:
web1.mydomain.com - 1.2.3.6

I've set up the A records for my domain, then I set up A records for
ns1 and ns2 to point to my DNS Server IP's. This is apparently not enough.

I've read about Glue records in post's "http://www.howtoforge.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12697"
and "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dns#Circular_dependencies_and_glue_records".

Also called circular dependencies. It looks to me like this is my problem.
When I do a "host mydomain.com" it sais "not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)".

I've set up other domain names and they work 100%.

To further try help you helping me, my Registrar told me to set up the
"forward and the reverse of the site".

Ring's any bell's for any one??

So if indeed it is the case, and I need to set up Glue records...how do I do this???

If I'm not making sense, just let me know and I'll try asking the question again.

Maybe some one has a screen shot of some sort? - I'm certain that would be
all explanatory in itself. This is quit urgent please.

I have the same problem.
Error in the A Record of ns and ns2.

Verify the Public A Record's in the mydns database, an see if there matching with the ones that you configure the domain.

You mean I should just double check if all my A records correspond?
See if my A records from MyDNSConfig from ns1, ns2 and web1 are all the same?

They are the same yes.

Off the topic, I just don't understand why when I run:
"host someotherdomain.com" n my ns server it picks it up and it was configured exactly the same way as "mydomain". But "host mydomain" doesn't get recognised...

Please let me know if you can figure out how to configure glue records.
My servers are standing and waiting JUST for this - and all this trouble just
because I decided to rather use proper DNS servers instead of ISPConfig as
both web AND DNS servers.

That'll teach me to not fiddle with something that is working just fine.

You must ask your domain registrar where you bought your domains to create a glue record for you.

I'm gona phone them as soon as first light appears over the horizon

--One question - why does the command "host mydomain.com" not give me a
--good reply like all the other entries I've made? My reasoning says that my server doesn't
--need to go all the way to my registrar to find this entry - or am I just clueless
--and as soon as Glue Records are up on their side it will show up on my side?

After playing some more, I think I just figured out that the "host" command only resolves existing domains.
My new domain is not registered yet (that is what all the trouble is about) and therefore no replies.
I was under the impression that it kind of works like "dig", telling me what my server is authoritative for...

Any case, thanks again for your time...

PS - after going thru all this, in your opinion (falko) it's probably better to register
a completely different domain (say mydnsdomain.com) for the two DNS servers
and so skipping all this confusion... Perhaps this might solve my troubles quicker
(rubbing the goti...thinking...).
Or would I rather just have one MyDNSConfig server and one ISPConfig server as
secondary DNS. How does the pro's go about doing it (I.E. you)??

That's up to you. In the end, both are DNS servers, so technically it makes no difference.
