Default .htaccess and internal server error

I have been trying to get .htaccess to work on my site but I continue to get an error. Is there something I need to install? My error log states: "[Mon Feb 26 21:56:26 2007] [alert] [client] /var/www/web4/web/.htaccess: Invalid command RewriteEngine', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration, referer:"

Please make sure that mod_rewrite is installed and enabled in your apache configuration.

Get ISPConfig support and the ISPConfig 3 manual from ispconfig.org.
