Default Poor resolution

I'm newbie in Debian and have big problem. After installing debian sarge my resolution is so bad that I get error 'too low rsolution' and can't compile kernel.
I use Sapphire Radeon 9000 64Mb and chose ATI radeon from database list (using xf86config command).
Can somebody help me to solve this problem? As I said I'm newbie and I want to learn and use Debian, but I need to install it first.
Thanks

So you're trying to compile your own kernel, and at the make stage the compiler tells you that your screen resolution is too low?
