Default Aps installler - how to tame it?

Could someone help me tame the APS Installer, I'm getting more an more frustrated by it...

Installed wordpress in the root of a domain and I get a redirect error when trying to do the domain/wp-admin/install.php thing and then it just takes the site down

Installed mantis as domain.net/bugs and when trying to reach it I get a 403 forbidden

How does it work? I just can't figure it out and the manual doesn't cover this at all. Is there a way to tame it or should I just forget about it?
