dovecot pop/smtp from remote client

I'm able to send and receive mail on the server locally via telnet.

When I try to set up an account on a remote computer running Win7/Outlook and access the server I get the following error message:

No, there's something very, very weird going on.

I can access the mailserver (pop and smtp) via telnet locally. I can access the smtp server remotely via Outlook.. but I cannot access the pop server remotely via Outlook 2007.

Interestingly, I can open up a DOS window on the Windows 7 machine and telnet into the server but there's just no way the Ooutlook 2007 cleint wants to talk to dovecot.

Since I'm able to access both the pop and smtp servers remotely from a Windows 7 command prompt but only the smtp server in Outlook (the pop server barfs) I though I'd install Thunderbird to see if it's something specific to Outlook.

And it would appear to be so.

Thunderbird connects just fine (though it did cough up a warning about the self-signed certificates) but Outlook just will NOT connect to the POP server.

Someone has to have encounted this....

Maybe you're using wrong settings in Outlook. Does Outlook try to connect to the correct port (110)? Maybe it's trying to use POP3S on port 995.

No, the port settings were fine. I checked, double checked, triple checked.

Everytime it tried to login to the pop server (using Outlook's test server option) it kept coming up asking me for a username and password.

The pop side seems to require username@comain for the username whereas the smpt server requires only username as the username.

Weird.

I think it's working now. More testing underway.
