what would be the best way to do this...

I have not problems starting with a clean install is there a live CD

similar to Ubuntu?

I switched to Debian

Now I just have to migrate all my Ubuntu stuff to deb

I was unaware that Ubuntu is built on Debian ... Now I do ;-)
