ISPConfig 3 installed now what?

I successfully complete the tutorial: The Perfect Server - Debian Squeeze (Debian 6.0) With BIND & Dovecot [ISPConfig 3]

I can log in to the system and upgraded yesterday to the version ISPConfig 3.0.4.2 and all is good.

I am very new to this product and I would like to understand a few things:

1. email postfix, dovecot SMTP, IMAP, POP3 is already setup by default? How do I test the functionality? Webmail is installed squirrel mail, how can I test it?

2. DNS was installed do I provide resolution to the clients e.g. www.ikick.com will be automatically created with @ikick.com email and dns resolution virtual host? do I need to create an MX record and Zone?

3. Is there a IRC channel for ISPConfig 3 that covers this common questions?

4. If I provide a tutorial and get published in howtoforge.com can I get a free copy if the ISPConfig 3 manual?

And it works just as you described, I added an screenshot (screenshot1) as well.

Now here I am a little confuse---> 2) You can use the dns wizard to create complete sets of dns records. They dont get created when you add a email domain or website.

Do I need to have an static IP per domain or client I will be hosting on the ISPConfig 3 server?

I used the dns wizard and configured the following (screenshot2).

I test sending an email to a gmail account and I got it, but replying from the gmail account to the client email = jsolis@lospctecs.com I get Delivery Status Notification (Failure) --> (screenshot3)

I am sure that there is something I am missing on the configuration of th dns, ns records, mx server and what static IP should I use if I only have one external static IP the one used by the ISPConfig 3 host server.

You don't necessary manage the DNS on the same server. However it could be a good idea to create the domain zone.

No, most of the cases with 1 static public ip you would be fine.

Where did you buy the domain? Did you configure the DNS in your domain registrant so that they point to your DNS server?

Hello there Rafael,

I got the domain name from godady

I am pretty sure is something I need to do with the name servers there and the external IP of the ISPConfig3 server e.g. 173.15.38.123 which is also pointing to the domain name "plumswap.com"

So everytime I add a new client, domain, site, example.com I need to make the ISP e.g. godaddy to point the name servers to the same 173.15.38.123 external ip and the ISPConfig3 server will do the virtual hosting to the address example.com, lospctecs.com, plumswap.com etc...

Yes or to another provider. In the past I used everydns.net, they where free at the time. Today I use the DNS of my hosting provider (www.linode.com) because they have 4 servers that manage the domain names and is less work for me.

So you could manage the DNS in your own server or in other place. You could not even own the domain, but a client of your that could manage the domain himself and you should ask him to configure the dns to point your server.

You should read a bit more about how DNS work. Not in the English Wikipedia tomarrow as it would be down thanks to #sopa

Here are some updates:

The server ISPConfig3 is up and running, I have one customer set up with website and also email. When I go to the domain name of the client "www.lospctecs.com" I get the default index page from ISPConfig3 successfully.

Question1: If I have a site do I upload the site manually using rsync or ftp CLI? or there is a GUI tool on ISPConfig3 for administrators to do it?

Question2: I can send emails but still can't receive them at this point I don't get any more messages about "Delivery Status Notification (Failure)" I just don't get any messages back but I don't receive the messages in the "user@lospctecs.com" account on the web mail squirrel main => www.lospctecs.com/webmail

Question3: If I am using the domain provider godaddy, is this correct in the configuration of the DNS, MX and other CNAMEs?

Is this what I suppose to received back? I believe something is missing or misconfiguration... please help

Question5: Can I use the IP static of the ISPConfig3 server as the IP to the MAIL server (postfix), FTP, DNS --> NS1 server or do I need to use the NS65.domaincontrol.com and NS66.domaincontrol.com as the godaddy is the domain name provider?

I am sure I am very close to understand what the issue is! I am really trying to read how DNS and MX records works and how they need to be configure when working with ISP providers and clients! Thank you!!!

1) You can use rsync, ssh, ftp cli or ftp with GUI like filezilla. As far as I know there is now way to upload the files from the web interface. I think it was possible with ISPconfig 2.
2) Not sure
3) Just what you have on that screenshot. Now I am sure you run that command in your ISPconfig server and I think it uses itself to resolve. So that is why you have the correct answer. This is what I get from one of my Linux boxes:

nslookup mx lospctecs.com
Server:		lospctecs.com
Address:	173.15.38.123#53

** server can't find mx: REFUSED

Goddady should be pointint to your server. If it point to Goddady dns servers you should configure them there. I think there is where you are wrong.

6) Yes you can use the same IP for several domains. Each IP can use TCP or UDP protocol. Each of those protocols have several thousands of ports and each port can be use for a service. Ports under 1024 are the known ports and where the main protocls of the Internet are used.
