Post Not recognizing Domain Name but website works with IP address

I wanted to host an intranet website locally for one of my prof's lab at university. In order to do that I installed ISPConfig 3 with Fedora 15 on a machine to use it as a webserver.

The problem I had was I could only go to the website using the IP address & not my typing, for example: www.example.com.

I have tried many different things but still couldn't make it work. Now I have deleted the website and the DNS zone I created in order to start off properly again.
I have only one IP address to work with. I was also given a Subnet mask, default gateway, Pref DNS and Alt DNS .

Q1 - Are these information enough to host an intranet site?
Q2 - How do I set up the DNS Zone or website from the information provided?

I would really appreciate a step-by-step instruction to get through this problem.
