I added the server specific reverse DNS records waited 24 hours
and restarted postfix for good measure, but emails to the inboxes I set up and login attempts to squirrelmail are still failing in the same way as before.

Is there anything else I should check?

Hi Ian

In master.cf you have:

Code:
maildrop  unix  -       n       n       -       -       pipe
  flags=DRhu user=daemon:mail argv=/usr/bin/maildrop -d ${recipient}
Try this:

Code:
maildrop  unix  -       n       n       -       -       pipe
  flags=DRhu user=vmail argv=/usr/bin/maildrop -d vmail ${extension} ${recipient} ${user} ${nexthop} ${sender}

Hi Pititis
I made the change to /etc/postfix/master.cf as suggested

then I restarted postfix
and tested again
the email I sent to the inbox was returned with the following message
Code:
Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

    ian@smallbizwebhosts.co.uk

Technical details of permanent failure:
Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 554 554 5.7.1 <ian@smallbizwebhosts.co.uk>: Relay access denied (state 14).
and the login test to squirrelmail also failed
the relevent section of the mail error log is shown below

The second line (beginning with flags=DRhu) must be indented. If there's no whitespace at the beginning of the line, it will not work.
