Backup Linux OS state and application

Hello,

Recently i worked on a running servers, i had to perform some action, but after working on system, it started malfunctioning - Using windows, we can backup system via Norton Ghost method.

Is there any procedure or method, from which we backup system current state. In case there comes an issue, we should have a process to revert linux on its old state.
