New here, need opinion on build plans

Hello, just registered after reading a How to that I was referred to via Ubuntu Forum.
My plan is to set up my new build with Ubuntu 9.04 AMD64 with two drives set up in software RAID 1; then to add Virtual Box and install 9.04 X86_32 guest. Then later on increase my physical RAM from 4 to 8 GB and install 9.04 AMD64 guest. Then again I may look into a different distro of Linux at that time. My initial build will be with on-board graphics but I do plan on adding a card or two later on.
I'm looking ahead to the 64 bit future while hanging onto what is avl. now. 3D CAD and electronic's programs will be the majority of my use though not the exclusive use.
Yes I will search this site for the How-To's but wanted to know if my 'general' plan is on the mark.
With my new build I will be free from Microsoft

That should work. You can find tutorials here for installing VirtualBox on Ubuntu and how to set up software RAID1.
