Perfect Desktop Ubuntu 8.10 Configuring Repositories

Hi,
I just installed Ubuntu 8.10, did the system update right away, and then proceeded to follow your protocol as described under your HowTo "The Perfect Desktop -- Ubuntu 8.1 (Intrepid Ibex).

In following your instructions diligently, in step 5, under "Configure Additional Respositories", when I run the command,

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update

the end of the output reads as follows:

E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (13 Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the list directory

What are the consequences of this? What should I do about it?

Is there maybe another apt process running (e.g., is Synaptic running)? If so, stop that process first.
