Default yum issues

hi all,

i have a problem with yum in the sense that it checks for dependancies when i
try to install the software. i know that is standard but it tries to update packages i dont even need(at least i dont think so). therefor it ends up with a chunk of mb to install and never usually succeeds. is there a work around this? eg get rid of all but essential dependancies?

sorry...forgot to mention, im on fedora 8
