How to Install Ubuntu 8.04 w/Software Raid1

Newbie to linux.

Went through instructions to set up partitions. Seemed to work fine. Set up two partitions on each drive. One 240.1GB for the root and 10GB for swap. Made root bootable on both. Created both MD devices.

Problem occurs when I try the section "Making every drive bootable"

I go to the terminal as user and type grub.
I'm on the grub command line and type "device (hd1) /dev/sdb" but it gives me a grub error saying file not found or some such.

Help please!

Edit... Found answer - run as root.
