apache/ispconfig stopped responding

I checked on our new server this morning after some phone calls of the webmail not responding. I ran ps aux | grep apache | wc -l and had 153 processes of apache running, and apache was not answering.

The ISPConfig3 control panel was also not responsive. at this point i rebooted the server to get services running again, but what can i do to prevent this kind of behavior in the future??

Which Linux distribution do you use?

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (GNU/Linux 3.2.0-24-generic x86_64)

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz
4GB of ram

I actually did that earlier today when I was going through the logs after a reboot, i thought it was unrelated and wouldnt cause apache to hang like that. I will keep an eye on it and make sure it doesnt happen again.
