What I meant by initial email, is an email arrive to user1 email, i setup mail forwarding so that any email arriving to user1 forwards a copy to user2

user1 should still get the email in his mailbox

I guess that is the definition of mail forwarding.

If I want user2 to get the messages destined to user1, I would create user1 as an alias of user2, and no need at all for forwarding

mail forwarding means that email is forwarded to another account. This will not keep backups.
