Wink How to install OpenOficeOrg 3.0.0 in Ubuntu 8.04

I have the 64 AMD version of Ubuntu 8.04 and have been trying to install OpenOffice.Org 3.0.0 alongside the 2.4.0 one already installed. I have followed the instructions posted by Falko Timme and can only get as far as:

... and go to the directory that contains all the .deb packages...

cd OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358/DEBS/

the one I get does not have the /DEBS/ at the end. I can only assume therefore that these instructions are not for the Linux 64 Deb platform.

Can anyone help with installation instructions for this platform?

Ernest.

are there any features that you can't absolutely live without that are present in OOo 3?

Wink How to install OpenOffice.Org 3.0.0 in Ubuntu 8.04

Hi Falko,
I did as you suggested and got as far as getting an icon on my Desktop with the words 000300_m9_native_packed_1_en-US.9358 but when I then tried to install with the command
in Terminal as per your instructions I get the message Command not found. You will note that the words above do not have cd in front or /DEBS/ at the end. However I do have an OpenOffice 3.0.0 Writer icon on my desktop for the first time and in Office in Applications.
When I tried to open it I get an error message which states:
Details: Failed to execute child process "/home/ernest/Desktop/OOo_3.0.0_LinuxX86-64_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz" (Permission denied)

Any further help would be appreciated.

Ernest.

Uncompress the file like this:
Code:
tar xvfz /home/ernest/Desktop/OOo_3.0.0_LinuxX86-64_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz
Then install it as shown in the tutorial.

Default How to install OpenOffice Org 3.0.0 in Ubuntu 8.04

Hi Falko,

Yes its me again, I uncompressed the file as suggested by typing in:tar xvfz /home/ernest/Desktop/OOo_3.0.0_LinuxX86-64_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz and got a page full of directories including: OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358/DEBS/ I then typed in
sudo dpkg -i *.deb and got a message - command not found. Very frustrating as I am sure I must be very close to success. I have to admit I am an absolute newcomer to Ubuntu so perhaps it is may fault in that I am not doing something right. In your instructions you
state then go to the directory mentioned above and install them with one single command which I did, I think that I am not doing that last stage correctly. Help!!!

Ernest.

Default How to install OpenOffice.Org 3.0.0 in Ubuntu 8.04

Hi Falko,

After sending you my earlier email I decided to do some more investigating of the new icon that appeared on my desktop with the text:/home/ernest/Desktop/OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358 On clicking on to this icon four other icons appeared one of which had the textebs which in turn led me another icon-titled: desktop- integration. and then:/home/ernest/Desktop/OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358/DEBS/desktop-integration/openoffice.org3.0-debian-menus_3.0-9354_all.deb.Clicking on this opened the Package installer-openoffice.org-debian-menus with this message in red against Status: Conflicts with the installed package 'openoffice.org-core'

I trust that this might be of some help to you in solving the problem of trying to install the Version 3.0.0 alongside the installed one.

Ernest.

Please do this:
Code:
cd /home/ernest/Desktop/OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358/DEBS
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

cd desktop-integration/
sudo dpkg -i openoffice.org3.0-debian-menus_3.0-9354_all.deb

Default How to install OpenOffice.Org 3.0.0 in Ubuntu 8.04

Hi Falko,

I did what you said and got this when I put my password in:
ernest@ernest-desktop:~$ cd /home/ernest/Desktop/
ernest@ernest-desktop:~/Desktop$
bash: command not found
ernest@ernest-desktop:~/Desktop$
Very depressing as we seem to be getting nowhere and I am becoming disillusioned!

Ernest.
