on the other I cannot open even gedit - it says it cannot find display! I have a couple of books about Linux and I can learn (with disgust) about editing the correct config file, but from terminal I cannot even edit files!
You can use gedit only if a desktop is installed on the system and you're logged in on the desktop. On the command line, you can use an editor like vi:

eth0's network configuration is in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0.
