Default Ubuntu / ISPConfig 3 Installation Error

Im following the Perfect Hosting server tutorial with ISPConfig3. I'm on page 7 and I'm getting the following error when trying to run the ISPConfig3 install php file:

"No PHP MySQL functions available."

I am using the PHP CGI option as outlined in the tutorial. However, I'm guessing that the "php" command is running the default Ubuntu php 5.4 which may yet not have MySQL installed.. I don't know.

I tried running apt-get install php5-mysql and it completes but I still get the error.

Would really appreciate some suggestions.

Thank you!
