hmm, that gentoo site you posted got me wondering... my box is built around a DFI Lanparty UT nforce4 Ultra-D mainboard, but I'm using an ATI graphics card with the latest drivers I just compiled thanks to falko Do you think the kernel source from that could be causing the problem? here is the contents of /usr/src:

ATI
ati-driver-installer-8.23.7-x86_64.run
fglrx-control-qt3_8.23.7-1_amd64.deb
fglrx-driver_8.23.7-1_amd64.deb
fglrx-driver-dev_8.23.7-1_amd64.deb
fglrx-installer_8.23.7-1_amd64.changes
fglrx-kernel-2.6.16.1_8.23.7-1+custom.1.0_amd64.deb
fglrx-kernel-src_8.23.7-1_amd64.deb
fglrx-sources_8.23.7-1_amd64.deb
fglrx.tar.bz2
kernel-image-2.6.16.1_custom.1.0_amd64.deb
linux
linux-2.6.16.1
linux-2.6.16.1.tar.bz2
modules
NFORCE-Linux-x86_64-1.0-0310-pkg1
NFORCE-Linux-x86_64-1.0-0310-pkg1.run

what do you think? BTW is this the file where the kernel source is supposed to be? I'm a lil confused as to where that should be.
