After weeks of trying to figure out why I can't access mysql, I can upon a thread today talking about upgrading mysql and it mention editing /etc/mysql/my.cnf and comment out the

If you choose to install the MySQL 5.1, you might run into the problem where it will not restart.

You just need to edit /etc/mysql/my.cnf.

Comment out this line:

# * BerkeleyDB
# Using BerkeleyDB is now discouraged as its support will cease in 5.1.12.

this was able solve my problem and I'm happy to say that I'm back up and running.
