I also noticed increased load and memory usage and had to revert back to the original settings.

Could there be some max connections limit in CENTOS?

I found setting short_open_tag to Off in php.ini...

I found setting short_open_tag to Off in php.ini solved this problem.
Not sure why but it did the trick for me :p
