For failover I use DNS failover provided by dnsmadeeasy. Within seconds of the master being unavailable traffic is redirected to the slave. When it becomes available again it redirects back.

Long term, make this second server as true mirror so the ids will match.

I think I've solved it by removing the cgi stanza from the default host file.

I 'think' that has solved it. Load has been a lot lower.

You could try failover dns. Dns made easy offer this. Or you could to do this manually by changing the a record. Set a low ttl and traffic to your backup would be routed pretty quickly.

Cheers till, looks like the problem was at san level. Emergency maintenance plus an ungraceful shutdown of the vm was to blame.

More reason for me bringing this server to the home office.
