VM Host Specs

Having ran ispconfig on numerous hardware nodes for years and learned some valuable lessons I've decided to move to a vm setup.

I have a couple of machines with different processors and specs. I'm not so great at knowing which is the most powerful or suitable.

Is there a simple command/tool/distro I can use on each of them to find out which in reality would be the most capable of hosting VMs?

Something like a load tester?

The host I have already set up to test as a host machine is running ubuntu server 12.10 with virtualbox and phpvirtualbox.
