Portable File Indexer (Windows)
Hi there

There are quite a few good file indexer around: strigi on kde, tracker on gnome (each can be used on the other), Google Desktop on multiplatforms, Windows Search....

However I'm currently looking for a portable file index that runs on widnows. Basically I have stored quite a few docs on my usb stick (encrypted of course) and I'd like to full-index them and have the db also on the stick and the indexing tool should be standalone.

Anyone has a suggestion here?

Good question. If anyone knows a solution, I'd be interested in that one, too.

There is a really nice and fast indexing library called apache lucene which is written in java and produces standalone file indices. I know that you are searching for a complete program, but maybe you find a application based on lucene trough the lucene website. So this is just meant asa hint as starting point for searching :)

I think I have found one:

They have several versions and I tried so far the professional trial. However the free version seems to be sufficient for me:

It uses about 20mb on the usb stick and indexes all "popular" files. Even thunderbird stuff - this is nice when you use portable apps in general on your stick. Upon installation, make sure not to install it onto the harddisk.

I did test this today at work with an install on the stick and then I setup at home a winxp in a vm and run the .exe on the stick and it works... files are indexed despite them being now assigned another drive letter. I think a unique ID for all the devices is used to determine where files are.

I'll test it more in the next few days.
