default dns records

I've been hunting around to find a solution for creating custom dns records when a site is create with the "Create DNS" and "Create DNS-MX" setting ticked.

All I could find was this discussion http://www.howtoforge.com/forums/showthread.php?t=365 on the topic. As this thread points out, some php changes are needed to do what I want to do. But just before I start hacking some code I thought I'd check to see if anyone else has come up with a solution or some code that they would like to share?

As far as i know, there is no code for custom DNS records available yet.

I'm interested in developing this and contributing the code so through who and how should this be done? Any coding guidelines, etc.
