Mysql error during FC5 Perfect Setup

While trying to set the administrative password for Mysql, I keep getting the following error:

bash: =1: command not found
mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'

I've uninstalled mysql and re-installed it twice now and keep getting the same error. I can't seem to figure out what I've done wrong. Anyone got any advice?

What commands exactly are you running when the error appears?
Are you running this as root? Is SELinux disabled?
