Domain sales and private name servers

Hi, i was just wondering if anyone can clear up a few things for me regarding the sale of domain names.

I would like to be able to sell domain names to clients, and would prefer not to use a reseller account, but instead run a couple of name servers of my own (either physically my own, or on a dedicated server somewhere)

Can someone explain to me the way this would work? for example how do i get to be able to sell domain names and run the DNS servers myself?

Before anyone tells me to google for it, i have, and have ended up more confused than before i started!!!
