Problems installing NForce4 sound drivers

I'm trying to install Nvidia's Nforce4 sound drivers on my Debian sarge amd64, but i keep having a problem with nvidia's installer (some snipping done for size limits):

but i can't seem to install kernel headers, when i
apt-cache search kernel-headers`uname -r`
nothing is returned, and when i apt-cache search kernel-headers, i can't find anything for kernel 2.6.16.1 Is it possible i might have kernel headers installed already? :confused:

If you compiled your kernel from the sources, then the header files are already there. Then your problem is something different... :confused:

Is there a command to check what the kernel headers are? Come to think of it, you may be correct about them being installed already, as I WAS able to build/install ATI graphics drivers, and that requires kernel source and headers, correct? If that's not the problem I'll just have to keep playing around with it until I figure it out

Could it be something with the kernel source? The installer log is saying the problem is most likely that the module is being built with the wrong kernel source. Now i DO still have the old kernel (2.6.8-12) on here, could that be interfering somehow? The log file shows:

Is this supposed to be the correct source path from your build instructions? If this is incorrect, the installer does have an option to change the source path being used. Also, should I remove the old kernel from the system? If you think it's a good idea to do that, then can you point me in the direction of some instructions on how to do so? thanks for the help :)

Hmmmmm...... all i could see is that some directories were messed up pretty bad. There is a way to fix that (the nVidia Nforce sound drivers) Perhaps you should try doing that with ndiswrapper. Ndiswrapper is primarily used for installing drivers for network cards, but is also used to install other windows drivers. I suggest that you install cabextract if you want to extract the .exe files. Then try and to experiment to see wich files you need to install. Go onto forums on the internet. If that fails (wich it shouldnt), try using the ALSA drivers. And also what computer are you running. Because i had to fix up a few graphical/monitor/sound problems myself. Please post that. (not the chip, the make... HP, Dell, Sun, Toshiba, IBM, Shuttle....)

Well actually I built this system myself a little over a year ago :D I ordered the parts i wanted from etailers and put it all together when it arrived. I had wanted a mostly windows gaming system, and i wasn't really satisified with what i could buy at Dell or HP etc. I realized I could more of what I wanted buy building it myself, so i did. At the begining of this school semester I started taking an intro to unix class (which is ironically taught on Fedora core Linux), and I've really started liking it alot. I decided to use the hdd from the old system for a Linux build, and I found that Debian seemed to be the best match for my system, so here I am, and now i want to see what I can do with this gaming wise, and we'll see from there :)
Hmm wonder if I shoulda posted this somewhere else :confused: Ah well. Anyways, I'll just have to keep hitting the net and try to figure this out.

Gaming you say.... i dont normally suggest this, but if you are having BIG problems and you can transferr all of the data and to start using Damn Small Linux (it has GREAT device configuration[the best i believe, or you could go to CentOS]) i suggest that you use cdega OR crossover office. Since you are a collage student and all, you should know of the usefull tools of Bittorent.... i shall say no more. And as for the sound cards, it looks as if other people have been having problems http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0404.2/1706.html.

Well there is a way, ive been researching ;)
From what ive seen, nvidia is broken with the 2.6 kernels. There isnt a workaround yet, but people are working at it, all it really requires is getting the various binary packages working with fedora (and since fedora ships with ALSA, well alsa) I suggest to go down to the 2.5 kernel OR to use this experimental gentoo kernel (see other people have been working on it)

hmm, that gentoo site you posted got me wondering... my box is built around a DFI Lanparty UT nforce4 Ultra-D mainboard, but I'm using an ATI graphics card with the latest drivers I just compiled thanks to falko :) Do you think the kernel source from that could be causing the problem? here is the contents of /usr/src:

Yes it looks alright. But you may have another problem. Does sound work on you're computer. If it doesnt, if may be muted ;)

When i got fedora, my sound was muted so be carefull ;_; :)
run alsamixer in a terminal, hit right-arrow until you get to item "External Amplifier", and type "m" to toggle the mute setting. Also toggle settings on (such as PCI, blah, blah, to make SURE that everything works)

i have a hunch but (please forgive me if im wrong) but you have .deb packages their.... the fedora derivative is .rpm. I always got frustrated when i tried to install .deb packages in fedora, i always got errors. There is a partial workaround http://lists.debian.org/debian-dpkg/2005/04/msg00051.html
but there doesnt seem to be much hope. Its the way the fedora directory server is structured. There iis a way to get that on debian, but not on fedora http://directory.fedora.redhat.com/wiki/Howto:DebianUbuntu.

In conclusion i think its .deb packages that are giving you the headaches.

Well I am actually running Debian sarge sbovisjb1, but I'm not sure where to find alsamixer? I set the volume in with the vlume control icon in the upper right corner of the desktop, and also with volume control 2.8.0 a gnome/g streamer based mixer application.

alsamixergui - graphical soundcard mixer for ALSA soundcard driver
gnome-alsamixer - ALSA sound mixer for GNOME

are available in apt-cache search, should i be using one of these?

Well ok i installed gnome-alsamixer, and now i have sound so i guess that was the problem :confused: Anyways, i'm figuring at this point the hell with the nforce sound drivers, i'll just use alsa and call it working well enough ;)

You have sound, but not on the nvidia graphics card, or do you?

Well I have sound for desktop, the games in the desktop, system events, etc but I haven't tried any real games yet, so i'm not sure about that. I have an ATI graphics card, the chipset is an nvidia nforce 4. But one thing I have noticed is that the vloume settings in gnome-volume-control seem to reset to off whenever i reboot the system, you know how to fix this, or where the documentaion is to fix it? thanks for all the help by the way :)

Well i figured out how to save the gnome-volume-control settings here :

You have it lucky :) you might be aware that games such as unreal tournament 2004, Half Life 2 and Doom 3 (this requires a little bit of wine config) to intall wine just type apt-get install wine.

Oh yes, try cedega you can build it you're self if you dont want to pay, and there are always people on the internet to show you how to get games to work
