Problems with new kernel compile and installation on ubuntu

i m trying to install new kernel image on ubuntu and used instructions provided in this forum somewhere. i m having some touble with the installtion steps.
it was mentioned that after new kernel compilation i will see 2 .deb images in /src but i only see one. and

dpkg -i command doesnt show up new kernel entry in the menu.lst.

i am using ubuntu on Vmware system. i dont think that would cause problems...
anyone has idea?

What's the output of ls -la /usr/src after the compilation?
Did you see any errors during the compilation?
