My brother's computer (an fairly old Dell Intel machine) has troubles with windows (The installation copies setup files, goes to restart and then copies the setup files all over again) so I decided to try put Ubuntu on it. I downloaded a DVD torrent of Ubuntu 7.10 burned it and popped it in and I get the following:

The menu loads I select load/install ubuntu

Loading screen

CD drive clicking noise

Then it says on the screen:

Busybox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu7) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built in commands.
(initramfs) [ 144.049678] ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen
[ 144.049726] ata1.00: cmd c8/00:08:00:00:00/00:00:00:00/e0 tag 0 cmd 0x0 da ta 4096 in

Sometimes get 'Buffer I/o error on device sda, logical block 0' but continues anyway.
Waited several hours and the number at the edge got to [ 6144.049726] or something like that.
I tried it on own computer and it all loads up fine I get the desktop up and am able to install if I wanted.
I want to install this on my brother's PC and help would be great.
Josh.

Sounds like a broken CD drive to me...

I'm not so sure, when I load Windows it does seem to copy the setup files. Where would it be getting all the structured numbers from on the screen when the Ubuntu is in?

Do you have a spare drive that you can use for testing?
