Were these devices switched on when you installed Ubuntu?
Any errors in your logs?

The CD/DVD and scanner are switched on when the computer is switched on, not sure if I had the printer switched on.

I attached a USB drive to my computer and it was reconised, so the USB must be ok.
I concur that the Epson printer and HP scanner needs linux drivers.
Cant find any on Epson and HP web site.

Is HPLIP installed (you can install it with Synaptic)? Then your HP scanner should work automatically.
