update manager - not working

Hello everyone

I recently installed and been using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron) on a machine and all seems to work fine the update manager doesn't seem to be working properly.

Infact i think its not working at all... after almost 2 hours i click install updates this is the screen i have:

Any sugestions? should i try re-install by using synaptic PM?

Can you open a terminal and run
sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade

Does that work?
