subdomain usage question

What's the intended way to go along with configuring subdomains ?

That is, to have sub.domain.com go to a folder at domain.com/sub WITHOUT having it redirect ?

your question is not clear to me (just a user)
my opinion isthat subdomains are highly misused. people look to treat them as simply another 'style' of page pointing. AVOID IF POSSIBLE. my opinion is that unless a hosted organiation has another ip within the ip address pool, dont do it. JUST MY OPINION.
