I installed suse 9.3 and ispconfig OK
Logged into ispconfig created reseller, client and new site.

Then i checked to see if the folder was created srv/www/www.mysite.co.uk.
I then extracted Mambo V4[1].5. -stable tar gzto this folder.
i opened a Firefox browser and typed http://www.mysite.co.uk/installation/index.php and I then get stuck with the following error.

The connection was refused when attempting to contact www.mysite.co.uk

I then tried again with this http://192.168.1.100/www.mysite.co.uk and recieved the following:

Object not found!

The requested URL was not found on this server. If you entered the URL manually please check your spelling and try again

All webpages in ISPConfig have to be in the web subfolder. You must extract joomla to this directory:

srv/www/www.mysite.co.uk/web/

Is www.mysite.co.uk's DNS record pointing to the correct IP address?

shajazzi
2nd January 2006, 10:32
Thanks for the speedy response falko and till,

When i extract mambo every thing gets duplicated and ends up in srv/www/mysite.co.uk/web2 with the original extraction being srv/www/mysite.co.uk/

I`ve checked the DNS record in ispconfig.

IP-Adresse ......... Hostname
192.168.1.100 ........ www

Mailserver ........ Hostname
192.168.1.100 ....... www

How did you download and extract joomla on your server?

shajazzi
2nd January 2006, 11:11
I`ve put the zipped up folder on my desktop.
Right clicked on the folder.....Extract to.....Select folder Ark opens......in the tree i selected srv/www/www.mysite.co.uk.
Clicked ok at the bottom of Ark.... this window closes and then i click ok on pop up window that is headed
Extract files from joomla_1.0.5-Stable-full_Package.t.

Ok, thats the problem. You must select:

srv/www/www.mysite.co.uk/web as destination, not srv/www/www.mysite.co.uk.

Ok i`ve installed into srv/www/www.mysite.co.uk/web after deleting mysite.co.uk from ispconfig and the recycle bins and the remade mysite.co.uk. This time a folder called web3 was made so i checked srv/www/web3/web and joomla files are duplicated in here.
I then tried to get joomla installation page up........Nothing but errors.

I tried the following:

http://www.mysite.co.uk/installation.index.php

http://192.168.1.100/www.mysite.co.uk/installation.index.php

http://192.168.1.100:81/www.mysite.co.uk/installation.index.php

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Could my router box be causing the problem?
Is it that i am already running Windows xp server on the same router box?
Do i have to delete the settings from the router box for windows xp for ispconfig to work?

Has anybody got any suggestions?

You must forward all neded ports (e.g. 80 and 81) from your router to your ISPConfig box.

In order to avoid seeing the Shared IP page, you must use www.mysite.co.uk in your browser's address bar to access www.mysite.co.uk, nothing else (e.g. IP address, ...).

Yes falko spot on,:D :D
I pointed all ports to ispconfig and deleted all ports pointing to Windows XP Pro server.
I just had to change the permissions in web2 to allow joomla to install.

However there must still be a permission problem because i cannot install any modules or components through Joomla back end.

Yes, the the error messages i am getting are:

Upload component - Upload Failed
ERROR: Could not find an XML setup file in the package.

Upload component - Failed
Installation file not found:
/srv/www/web3/web/media/install_43bc6528e164d/

This looks as if it'S entirely related to Joomla. Did you ask the Joomla guys?

shajazzi
5th January 2006, 08:55
I haven`t as yet,Although i still think it`s a permissions problem somewhere. I tried to load the joomla patch and it just gets kicked out. Meanwhile I`ll give joomla forums a go and let you know how I get on.

To which directory does Joomla try to upload the file? What are the permissions of the directory, to which owner and group does it belong?
Who is your Apache owner and group?

shajazzi

I`ve deleted joomla and installed a copy of mambo that installs on my windows server Ok every time.
When i installed it to www.mysite.co.uk it installs ok but i still can`t install any new components or modules.

My apache owner is root and group is root

Owner: can view & modify content
Goup: can view content
Others: can view content

Thanks

I use Joomla on several different sites, and it works great and have never had any problems install modules or components onto it.

How and where are you trying to upload from?

Incase you havent tried yet, at least what works for me, download the .zip or .gz file to your Linux Desktop, then in the Install Components page in your Joomla Admin area, there are 2 options of install. 1) is "Upload Package File" and 2) is "Install from directory", obviously install from directory and use the path to the appropriate file on your desktop. You shouldnt even need to unzip/gunzip it, as Joomla will handle this for you :)

Also under Install from directory, please be sure that yours looks like this:

media/ Writeable
administrator/components/ Writeable
components/ Writeable
images/stories/ Writeable

And if not, then a simple chmod 700 -R to your joomla dir will fix that.

Hope this helps.

My apache owner is root and group is root

I doubt that your Apache user and group are root because you have to compile Apache in a special way so that Apache allows to be run as root.
You can find the Apache owner and group in the Apache configuration file.

Please find out to which directory your applications try to upload, and then post the output of ls -la /path/to/upload_directory I'm sure it's a permissions problem.
Maybe the installation instructions of your applications mention something about directory permissions.

Thanks for the reply Blu3

The install new components section looks like this after a failed install::confused:

Upload Package File

Upload component - Upload Failed
ERROR: Could not find an XML setup file in the package.

Upload component - Failed
Installation file not found:
/srv/www/web13/web/media/install_43c0519ce09a8/

Install from directory

Upload new component - Error
Installation file not found:
/srv/www/web13/web/administrator/components/com_installer/component/
[ Continue ... ]

Everything is writeable:

media/ Writeable
administrator/components/ Writeable
components/ Writeable
images/stories/ Writeable

I tried to installing components from from both my desktop and root, both with the same results.
I also logged into administration from another machine running on windows and tried to upload component from it`s Desktop but unfortunately got the same results.

Thanks falko,
I could not find anything that relates to owner or group in the etc/apache2/httpd.conf only when I right click on under ownership:

user root
group root

Maybe i am looking at the wrong file or folder.

I have just noticed something else.
There is no .htaccess file but instead htaccess.txt.
I cannot reach the site from www.mysite.co.uk but I can from www.mysite.co.uk/index.php.

And another funny thing. I copied mysite folder from my windows server on to a disc so that i could transfer it to my Linux server. I opened the folder and the .htaccess file was missing (something weird going on)

Hi again,

Well it looks like that might be your problem all along.

" ERROR: Could not find an XML setup file in the package. "

Basically components in Joomla/Mambo use a xml file to tell Joomla what it is and what to do with it.

What component are you trying to install?

And are you sure that there is an xml file included with it?

Also have you checked to be sure you have xml support on your apache/php installation?

Honestly it sounds like other than, you should be ok. If all your dirs are Writable and you have tried the above, then I would check those two things. I have some experience with joomla, and it seems to be pretty much smooth sailing for everyone of my joomla installs.

Blu3

Sorry to double post Admins.

I just read your last post shajazzi, and the htaccess.txt is normal. This is the default and should remain this way. If you change the file to .htaccess then you will not be able to browse your site. joomla uses htaccess.txt, versus .htaccess, for cross compadiblity, ie: Win, Linux, Apache etc...

Just an fyi

The component that i am trying to install is Recommend_2_2>zip
I check for the XML file and it does exist.
I deleted from my windows server and then reinstalled it and it works ok
so there is nothing wrong with the Zip folder
How do i check to see if i have xml support on my apache/php installation?

sorry I`m a bit lost in Linux:confused:

It is possible that there are other files included in /etc/apache2/httpd.conf. Please have a look at those files, too. Normally, under SuSE, the Apache owner is wwwrun, and the group is www.

Please try this:
chown -R wwwrun:www /srv/www/web17/web

Thanks Falko,
That did the trick OK.
I would like to know what was causing the problem and why chown -R wwwrun:www /srv/www/web17/web fixed it? Just for future reference.

Thanks again and I appreiate your time

It was a permissions problem. Apache is running as user wwwrun, and if all directories and files belong to wwwrun instead of root and wwwrun has write permissions (which the owner usually has), then everything is fine.

I have installed modules and components and everything is OK until I try to install phpshop. I checked the Mambo forums and their seems to be a lot of others having a similar problem because of PHP safe mode. I tried many times to install PHP shop manually but it still will not work. Is there a work around for this problem?

This are known problems with mambo. The only known workaround is disabling PHPSafeMode. But thats a security risk if you host not only your own sites on your server.

Thanks Till,
When I searched for a php safe mode patch I came across a suggestion that you might be able to install mambo including phpshop onto a windows server and then copy everything to a Linux server therefore avoiding the php safe mode issue.
I am using windows XP Pro with phpMyAdmin 2.5.6 with a couple of sites using phpshop and no problems. On the Linux server i am using Suse 9.3, ISPConfig and under tools PHPmyadmin2.6.4.
I`ve looked at Web-ftp to upload everything from windows to Linux but it looks as if you can only upload one file at a time.I am not familiar with ftp, maybe i am missing something here.

These are my questions:

1. Do I need to downgrade to phpmyadmin 2.6.4 from 2.5.6 in Linux?

2. Can I Zip the windows xp pro web and the phpmyadmin folders to a disc and then just paste them into the Linux folders?

3. If no to question 2 how do I ftp Folders from windows to Linux?

I can't imagine how this is supposed to work...

I don't think phpMyAdmin has anything to do with your problem...

2. Can I Zip the windows xp pro web and the phpmyadmin folders to a disc and then just paste them into the Linux folders?
Yes. You can also transfer the zip file to your server using FTP (or WinSCP) and then unzip it there again.

3. If no to question 2 how do I ftp Folders from windows to Linux?
Why don't you use a "real" FTP client like WS_FTP or SmartFTP? Then you can transfer directories, multiple files, etc. And you don't need to copy your files to a disc.

Thanks Falko,
Does this mean that I cannot offer migration for sites already using mambo/phpshop without disabling php safe mode right across my Linux server?

Will phpshop just stop working after FTP migration? ie Test site running on Windows http://www.3lions2006.com

Mombo wont work with SafeMode enabled. Have you thought about using PHP as CGI together with SuExec or the suPHP extension. then your installation will be secure without needing PHPSafeMode. But the performance of this solution is not as high as with mod_php.

OK thanks Till,
This time I set up a new site in ispconfig and checked all the boxes accept PHP Safe Mode and extracted joomla 1.0.7 eCommerce to the appropriate web folder and started the installation.
The first page confirms that safe mode is OFF.
The install goes well and I can log in to back end as administrator but cannot access phpshop when i go to view my site all I get is a blank page.
If I install joomla first and then phpshop I loose the front end but can log in to the back end.
Also in the PHP.ini safe mode is OFF.

I know very little about PHP and even less about CGI.

You have to set your php memory limit higher. Open your php.ini and set the memory limit to 32 MB for example:

memory_limit = 32M

Then restart your apache webserver.

The php.ini is located in /etc/php5/apache/php.ini or /etc/php4/apache/php.ini or something similar. You can find it with the command:

locate php.ini

The correct file is the one located in the /etc/... directory.

Have a look at these two threads. They are for Drupal, but Drupal's .htaccess file looks exactly like yours.

Thanks falko,
I had a look at the threads you mentioned and no luck i`m afraid.
My problem is i cannot edit the .htaccess file because i haven`t one.
The closest i can get is to create a file and name it htaccess but this is not going to work so I change the file from htaccess to .htaccess and the file disappears so then i cannot edit it.
I do not know whats going on. I`ve come this far, all I want is frendly URLS.:(

Thats normal, files that begin with a dot are hidden files in linux.

You can either edit it on the commandline, to get a file listing use "ls -la" command or you use a program like winSCP to connect from a windows workstation and edit the file.

If you want to see the file in FTP, you will have to modify the LsDefaultOption in your ftp server configuration.

Till's right. I guess you use FTP to manage your .htaccess file which normally doesn't work unless you configure your FTP server in a different way (see Till's post above).

I recommend to manage that file on the command line. You can use an editor like vi to edit the file on the command line. Read here to learn how to use vi: http://www.howtoforge.com/faq/12_15_en.html

Thanks falko and till,
you`ve been a great help but i still cannot get .htaccess to work.
I tried this to see if .htaccess override is allowed:

I deleted everything from my .htaccess and replaced it with this
Redirect /google.html http://www.google.com
then i pionted the browser to http://www.englandshirt.com/google.html and this works fine.
When replace Redirect /google.html http://www.google.com with the following

mod_gzip_on Yes

<Files .htaccess>
order allow,deny
deny from all
</Files>

ErrorDocument 404 /errordocs/error404.php

I tried as you suggested but recieve this error.

The requested URL /Contact-Us/ was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

In the address I get this

http://www.englandshirt.com/Contact-Us/

I copied the .htaccess that is running on my Windows server but still no joy. I also tried different versions of SEF .I tried about all versions of .htaccess code that I`ve found in the mambo forums but get just slight variations of the same error.

Is your Mambo installation in the top-level directory of your web site, or is it in a subdirectory?

My sites are in the following directories
srv/www/web1/web
srv/www/web2/web
srv/www/web3/web
srv/www/web4/web

This is where i have put the .htaccess file.

On my Windows sever the .htaccess file is in

C:\Apache\htdocs\mysites

and all Mambo sites have 404 SEF installed and all run fine.

I have tried all the previous .htacces files you suggested but with no luck.
There has to be something really simple that i am overlooking.

I guess it must be a slight change in the .htaccess file...
Do you get a 404 or a 500 error with the different .htaccess files?
Is there anything in the Apache error log?

Comment out mod_gzip_on in your .htaccess file.

Please change this in your Apache configuration:

<Directory /srv/www/*/web>
Options +Includes FollowSymLinks -Indexes
AllowOverride None
AllowOverride Indexes AuthConfig Limit FileInfo
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
<Files ~ "^\.ht">
Deny from all
</Files>
</Directory>

to

<Directory /srv/www/*/web>
Options +Includes FollowSymLinks -Indexes
AllowOverride All
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
<Files ~ "^\.ht">
Deny from all
</Files>
</Directory> and restart Apache.

My next problem is that i installed Joomla with safe mode disabled and it works OK until i try to install Virtuemart.
The component installs OK but the shop isn`t there.
I noticed this when I tried to migrate a site with phpshop from my windows server i had to manually remove all phpshop components and modules for the site to work also there was a problem with the news feed scroller which also had to be removed.
I have also tried to install the complete joomla eCommerceEdition package but this results in not being able to view the site front end, but i can log in to the back end
Any suggestions?

Are you shure taht all directories where these installers want to write their files to are writable?

Can you please make a new thread with your next question. Its easier when each thread handles only one problem :)

Hi!

I had problems with installing Mambo, but after executing chown -R wwwrun:www /srv/www/web17/web I managed to install Mambo.

But now I have problems with stuff in /web folder. I can't create new folder...not in ISPConfig not through FTP Client. How can I fix this?

How can I fix this?

By changing back the owner and group of /srv/www/web17/web. You should only change the ownership of those directories that Apache needs write access for - but instead of changing the owner and group, you could also do a chmod 777 /path/to/directory
