Cannot upload to directory unless chown to apache:apache

As the title says, I cannot upload an image to a directory that apache is not the owner of. If I create a directory under FTP, in this case, web1_webmaster, I do not have upload access to that folder. Permissions on the folder are set to 775 too.

/images/ with web1_webmaster:web12 -> cannot upload
/images/ with apache:apache -> uploading works

What gives?

If you want to upload files with FTP scripts under the same user web1_webmaster, you will have to install SuPHP.
