clamav and spamassassin

hi,
clamav and spamassassin are not working, I receive a load of viruses and spam, what can I check to ensure that they are running? I followed closely the guide of ubuntu 5.10 perfect setup.

when you created the mail user/accounts did you check the appropiate tick boxes (like mailscan, scan for virus and the others) ?
If SA is running you should be able to tell from the mail headers if SA is running (you should have a header from SA)
