Are there any plans to include this in a future release? I would find this very useful. It would also be a way to stop all the questions about how to use an email address as a user name.
Great product btw

The ISPConfig 3 alpha version uses DB authentication already. DB authentication will most likely not be implemented for ISPConfig 2.x versions.
On a semi-related note till, since 3.x will be modular, does that mean that someone can write a module for oh say Qmail? Sorry, I'm an old Qmail hound, and while postfix is working, I'd rather have my old Qmail+vpopmail back. :D

Yes, that is possible in ISPConfig 3.

Will be there a migration path from 2.x series to 3.x series?
Will DB authentication be integrated into 2.x series if someone provides patches?

Yes. We will build a import tool, no direct update.

Yes. But it must be possible to switch between the old / new behaviour either by setting a variable in the config.inc.php file or in management > server > settings on the mail tab to ensure that this does not break the compatibility with current versions.
