eGroupWare install problem

I downloaded the eGroupWare tarball to my "web1/web" directory. When I set ownership to "root:web1" as suggested I am denied access to http://myserver.com/egroupware/setup url from the browser. When I set ownership to "www-data:web1" and try to access http://myserver.com/egroupware/setup url I get a http 500 internal server error.

Any suggestions on how to overcome this and get eGroupware setup and running?

Does eGroupware uses a .htaccess file? If so, please check if all the permissions are granted to .htaccess files that ae needed for egroupware.

You do know that if the file isn't CHMODed, then it will not be accessible, because you're accessing it via a browser? Just 777 the actual setup dir, and the index file, then once you've done that, you will be able to run it.

sorry for this silly suggestion, but you did untar the packasge, didn't you? You just said you downloaded it and tried to access it...

First off thanks for the quick suggestions I really appreciate it. To answer, yes I did untar the file. Second, change mod to 777 changed error message from http 500 server failure to http 403 forbidden. Till I think you hit the nail on the head but the .htaccess file is not in egroupware but in post nuke.

I originally installed post nuke to play around with it and see how it worked (having never used it before). Now wanting to change to eGroupWare. I untarred the eGroupware files into the "web" directory that still contained all the post nuke files. When doing a "locate .htaccess" I find several buried in the post nuke directories. I think my best bet is to just delete the post nuke stuff and start from scratch with eGroupWare. I am quite sure I will be satisfied in the long run with eGroupWare for my purposes. Will post here my results when I get a chance to get them done which will be after our holiday this week.

would you mind posting how you like it, maybe giving some points you liked ans some you did not? I only played around with egroupware a year ago or so and I guess a lot has changed.
