View Full Version : Server Not Serving Email

Ok every couple of days my server seems to lock up, you can still do anything and it all seems to work (ie web front end, serving web pages ect..) but it appears that the root partition gets mounted (well when you reboot the server you get an error saying that \ could not be dismounted).

But the worst thing is that the mail stops working, I sent one test email to and from one of my accounts on the server and nothing happened for around 10 mins until I rebooted the server.

Which log files should I post to help find the problem.

Do you get any messages in your logs, especially mail log? If not, it might be that your system partition is mounted read only due to a failure during boot.

I will check over the weekend and investigate and post anything I dont understand in this post... thanks

Ok my server is doing it again, what log files should I be looking in.

This is my mail log file can anyone see any problems. This is the entire contents of the log file which I find a little odd I thought it would be bigger than this.

server1:/var/log # vi mail

Any errors in /home/admispconfig/ispconfig/ispconfig.log around the time you created the user testuser@www.chesterfieldathletics.org.uk ?

So at the moment the server is in the same state (not working properly) all the web sites ect and the portal are working fine, but mail will be delayed. I can fix this with a reboot but I will try not to and give some of you guys a chance to advise me on what to look for.

Thanks

Ok Looking at the Control Panel I get this:

Server Online since: 1d, 21:10h
Users Online: 1 user
System Load 1 Minute: 3.00
System Load 5 Minutes: 3.00
System Load 15 Minutes: 2.98

Which looks a bit high compared to what it is usually.

Also is there a command to look at what the hard drives are doing... like ps-aux works to lsit the processes.

Thanks

You can check with the command "top" which processes are causing the load. To quit top, type "q".

With a lot of help from martinfst we think the problem was caused by a line in the master.cf file that was commented out. (suse default install error)

Thanks to martinfst, falco and till for your help on this one hopefully there wont be any more problems.

Thanks
