Anybody have a VirtualBox Tutorial

Hello has anybody written a tutorial for installation and konfiguration of virtualbox under ubuntu or centos?


It would be nice someone could do this

i got about 20 lines typed up so far
if you used VMware - workstation before you will right at home

to install type
sh VirtualBox_1.3.2_Linux_x86.run install /home/name/vb/

or pick an place you want it to be installed to


than to load it up goto : on the gnome desktop its application -> system tools -> VirtualBox

i will try and get it done by tonight when its cools down a tab .. :)
im off to find some dinner n stuff for a while


i say i say maybe by 10 / 11 pm my time i may have it done and a vid as well on it booting and install ipcop in the VB

sh <vb.sh> install sh VirtualBox_1.3.2_Linux_x86.run install /opt/innotek/VirutalBox

add your username to the vboxusers group and see if thts works
i got it all in the howto but im not going to post half of it here .. tab too big

I have it installed on Ubuntu 6.10 host with CentOS and Windows XP guests. After adding user to vboxusers, it runs quite nice. The only problem i have is that it's running with beryl and it don't play nice with beryl.

few Q's:

- Have yo gotten bridge networking to work? (importnat for ISPConfig)
- Can you assign a static IP for your VM?
- What's the best way to run VB under Beryl/XGL?

Beryl/XGL? : don't know i have not tryed that yet : i need to find some free time to do an os install on my good pc ... so thats out of the windows i can find a week of non-tv time i want to play with on learning

if your pc picks up an IP address from an DHCP server / router than you should be able to set it one .. in them or
just set one like you normal do on any OS

bridge networking : havn't try that
i got an ip from my dhcp server and that as about as far as i went

very nice tutorial you wrote but something interesting missing:

how to create a static TAP interface
how to use the Remote Desktop Support (VRDP)

For me its very easy to setup a vmware workstation with a static ip-adress and get it working on both windows/linux but with virtualbox it seems to be a bit more difficult to set up an static-ip adress and to use the Remote Desktop Support so these would be the things of interesting.

would be nice to have a continued tutorial from you

i was writing it as i was doing the install / learning to use it myself
but at the time i haven't had time to learn more on it yet

due to the fun fact im updating an heap of my IRC howto lol

so i hope to get some free time and will try to learn more on the VB .... so i can do an Part 2 on it :)

i'm impressed with the speed using winxp guest compared to vmware. VB is actually faster and the response is more fluid than vmware and paralells. i suppose it's because it's still limitted in functionallity compared to the two paywares.

I found a how-to with setting the guest a stitic IP using Host networking. It still has some quirks but I suppose if someone knows how to build a script for it shouldn't be a problem. I'm still struggling on how to be ble to run more than one guest without having problems with bridging.

I'm also having a hell of a time trying to get my USB dongle, Webcam, and PocketPC detected. I've done everything on the following link. just doesn't detect the devices under winxp guest.

PS, don't worry about Beryl/Compiz. it's really not worth it if stability is your first priority on your box :).
